International Regatta Ends in Turmoil

The FISA Rowing Tour was taking place on Lough with participants many of them retired or of mature age. 
Killaloe Coast Guard Unit, Irish Coast Guard Rescue Helicopter, Lough Derg Life Boat, Limerick Marine Rescue,North Tipperary civil Defense, Fire, Ambulance and Garda services were all tasked as  weather conditions suddenly deteriorated causing concern for teams of rowers who remained unaccounted for. The Killaloe Coast Guard Unit and the Rescue boat at University Activity Centre Killaloe brought 40 persons ashore at the University facilities at Killaloe where they were treated for mild hypothermia. An extensive search continued for some time as 5 persons remained unaccounted for.
